The Pizza Man is the only Illinois-bred to win the Arlington Million (G1). Bred and raced by Richard Papiese’s Midwest Thoroughbreds and trained by Roger Brueggemann, he is a son of turf champion English Channel. At two and three years old he ran in the Midwest and won most of his starts, including the Tex’s Zing Handicap at Arlington and Buck’s Boy Handicap at Hawthorne. At four, his stakes wins included the Black Tie Affair Handicap at Arlington. His first graded stakes win was in the 2014 Stars and Stripes Stakes (G3) at Arlington with Florent Geroux up, a feat he and “Flo” repeated in 2015. He achieved his Arlington Million XXXIII (G1) win the following month, again with Geroux in the irons. He won the 2015 Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) at Del Mar with Mike Smith riding, and at age seven the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (G1) at Woodbine with jockey Flavien Prat. He retired at age eight in 2017 after he developed an ankle chip. The Pizza Man won a 17 of his 36 career starts, with 3 seconds, 3 thirds and earnings of $2,158,941. Old Friends thanks Midwest Thoroughbreds and the loving support of The Pizza Man’s many fans.
