Far North - Wicked Witchcraft - Good Behaving | 1989 Horse
Obit: From Michael...
We lost The Wicked North last Monday. He was humanely euthanized at Hagyard's Equine Medical after suffering with a fatal lipoma. He was a great racehorse and a better retiree. Outgoing, friendly and proud. It's been a tough few months with our recent losses but I hope that the harbingers of spring will bring us longer periods between these heartbreaking events.
History: An Eclipse Award winner and record setter, The Wicked North won 8 of his 17 starts, including multiple Grade 1 victories. Bred by Edward Zurek and raced by the Philip and Sophie Hersh Trust, the bright red colt won the Bing Crosby Stakes (G3) and San Francisco Handicap (G3) in 1993. At in 1994 he was even more impressive, taking the San Antonio Handicap (G2), the Oaklawn Handicap (G1) , and setting the record for a mile and an eighth at Hollywood Park in the Californian Stakes (G1). He crossed the finish line first in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1), but received a controversial disqualification for drifting into the path of another horse.
His achievements earned the 1994 Eclipse Award for Older Male Horse, and his earnings totaled $1,180,50. From 1995 to 2006 he stood at stud in California, New York and Kentucky, most recently at True North Farm in Versailles. Battles with EPM and colic closed his stud career. In October, 2008 he was generously donated to Old Friends by former Michigan racing commissioner Annette Bacola. With his brilliant red coat and a white leg, The Wicked North has oodles of flash, and even more class. Even Creator seems impressed!
