Damascus - Copernica, by Nijinsky (CAN)

Obit from Cabin Creek:
Old Friends at Cabin Creek has sad news. 29 year old stallion Crusader Sword(Damascus) passed away last night, May 10, 2014 from old age. He raced for Paul Mellon's Rokeby Stable and was trained by Mack Miller. He was a multiple grade 1 winner. He was at stud for many years and when pensioned came to Cabin Creek. He had 5 years of happy retirement as an ambassador for thoroughbred aftercare. His nickname was Grandpa. He ruled the paddocks at the top of the hill and was loved by everyone. He was gentle with children. He danced for his dinner every night, snorting and tap dancing around his paddock. He's racing in green pastures now with his old friends Rio and Key Contender. All your old friends here will miss you Grandpa. RIP

Bred in Virginia by Paul Mellon, Crusader Sword raced in the colors of Mellon’s Rokeby Stables. Trained by Mack Miller, the bright bay colt showed outstanding precocity with victories in two prestigious 2 year old races at Saratoga, the Hopeful S (G1) and Saratoga Special (G2).

He also won at Belmont and got a third in the Belmont Futurity (G1). At 3 he continued his wins at those tracks and took a third in the Tom Fool (G2) at Belmont, for $327,476 career earnings.

After standing much of his stud career near the scene of his racing triumphs, at Questroyal and Foggy Bottom farms, this true, if honorary, New Yorker was welcomed to the Bobby Frankel Division of Old Friends at Cabin Creek, New York.
