When Patton won his first start as a two year old, the steward’s remark was simply: "Impressive." At three, Patton continued to impress, winning the William Thompson Stakes at the Meadowlands at a mile on the dirt, and placing in other stakes races at three and four.
At five he achieved his biggest win in the Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Spring (G2).
In all, the bay son of Lord At War won 6 of his 18 starts and hit the board another 6 times under jockeys Rene Douglas, Robbie Davis and Jose Santos, conditioned by Hubert Hine. His track earnings totaled $237,462.
Entering stud in 1997, Patton sired Precisionist Stakes winner Patton’s Victory bred by Brereton C. Jones and $1,853,831 winner Kelly’s Landing. Old Friends is grateful to Brereton C. Jones for enabling the exceptionally un-warlike, sweet-natured stallion’s retirement to Old Friends.
Trivia: Patton raced against You And I and Afternoon Deelites, later his near paddock neighbors at Old Friends.
