Update 10/20/10

From Michael…
Our young friend, Lucy Duane and her friend Abby came by the farm on Sunday and donated $209.07 to Old Friends. All the bills and and coins were delivered in a plastic bag. Lucy and Abby raised the money through bake sales and other community activities. The donation was very, very generous and very, very helpful but these two young people do even more by raising awareness about these great old athletes in retirement.
In the latest issue of the Thoroughbred Times there’s a wonderful piece on Storm Cat’s victory in the Young American Stakes at Meadowlands 25 years ago. But the tag line is the best when it’s observed that they won’t really know how good he is until he “meets the likes of Ogygian.”
I’m on my way to Boston. The MSPCA is honoring Old Friends with their Human Hero Award (it’s a bit of tokenism…since the animals deserve all the credit) on Thursday night at a dinner at the John F. Kennedy Library. It’s another way to get the word out and I’ll be able to visit their horse rescue facility, Nevins Farm, on Wed….Calvin Borel and Jean Cruguet have confirmed their attendance at our post-Breeders’ Cup party on the 7th. We’ll have plenty of halters to auction off and some really great art work…The drought has forced us to start feeding hay much earlier so we need the extra money to get through the winter…Thanks to everyone…Come visit.
