Update Jan 31, 2012

From Michael…
It’s 62 degrees and sunny here at Old Friends. Through the back window, you can see Afternoon Deelites sunning himself and Gulch nibbling the grass that’s lasted almost all winter. Fortunate Prospect was jogging this morning at dawn and Clever Allemont just gets better looking every day. Ferdinand’s Star and Diamond Stripes, two of our newest retirees, are settling in very nicely. Tinners Way, who’s gained some nice weight, adores Williamstown. Eternal Orage’s abcess, because of Kent and Janet’s constant care, is just about cured. Charlotte and Diane, with the help of a lot of people including Rachel and Mary, are doing a great job giving the gift shop a new look.
Oldfriendskentucky, the pacer, is running tonight just before 5 p.m. at Western Fair Raceway. Campaigned by our great friend and supporter, Roy Steele, the standardbred has become our standard-bearer..and he’s already donated nearly $1000 to his Thoroughbred brothers and sisters at Old Friends. If everything goes well, Oldfriendskentucky will move on to Woodbine and, we hope, to The Red Mile this spring.
As most of our long-time supporters know, February is our toughest financial month. Thank goodness it’s the shortest one as well. If you are considering making a 2012 donation, it would be most welcome now. We’ve worked out a very advantageous arrangement with the Citizens Commerce National Bank concerning our mortgage so the big picture looks better than ever. We’re getting more and more requests to take racehorses so we need more money to do it. Here’s a couple of ideas. We’re starting an Equicaid program where for $500 per year a donor would be designated as that Thoroughbred’s health care provider. The names of the donors and the horses would be listed on our website. Also, we’re starting a halter program where, for a donation of $250, we would send you the halter from the Thoroughbred of your choice. There would be two available from each horse each year. Every dollar we raise in February is like $2 in any other month. Thank you so much for everything. One more thing – we’re working on retiring a couple of very popular racehorses over the next month or two.
