Obit:
New Export, winner of two G1 races in Brazil and imported to the United States by Bobby Frankel, was recently euthanized at Old Friends at Cabin Creek after developing severe laminitis and other complications. He raced until age 8, winning 6 from 25 starts, and earning $261,125. He arrived on January 1 at Old Friends, with the assistance of Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs and Jerry and Ann Moss,  and was immediately nicknamed Rio. JoAnne and Mark Pepper and their host of volunteers took to Rio at once, making him a Cabin Creek favorite.

History:
New Export was bred in Brazil by Agropecuária E Haras Roll.  At age 4, he won two major Brazilian races, the Gran Premio Estado do Rio de Janeiro (G1) and Gran Premio Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado (G1).

His prowess, and its range from 1 mile to classic distance at 1 ¼ miles, caught the eye of trainer Bobby Frankel, who did indeed import him.  New Export made his US debut in spring, 2006, racing for T N T Stud and Michael Bello.  In the Inglewood Handicap (G3) he performed well at 1 1/16 mile on the turf at Hollywood Park, earning a 3rd.  In June he did even better, battling to the lead and holding it nearly to the wire in the Dallas Turf Cup (G3) at Lone Star Park.  That August he scored another 3rd in the Harry F. Brubaker Handicap at Del Mar.

In all, he raced until the age of 8, garnering 6 wins, 3 seconds and 6 thirds from 25 starts, for a total of $261,125, and retiring at the age of 8.  On the first day of 2010, New Export arrived at the New York division of Old Friends named for his trainer, Bobby Frankel.  Rio - as he has been nicknamed - was welcomed with an open house celebration and a surprise—his first snow.  Old Friends is grateful to Dottie Ingordo and Jerry & Ann Moss for facilitating New Export’s retirement.
