Dewan - Moon Glitter - In Reality  bay horse

Glitterman, the world-record setting sprinter, was humanely euthanized April 14 at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY. The 26-year-old stallion was suffering from the infirmities of old age, including debilitating arthritis.    He had been retired at Old Friends since 2009.

The son of Dewan was bred in Kentucky by Frank D. Turner out of the In Reality mare Moon Glitter. On the racetrack Glitterman captured nine wins from 25 starts and earned a career total of $473, 914. He set a world record for 5 ½ furlongs at Hialeah in 1989.

As a sire he produced four millionaires from 26 stakes winners: Balto Star, Glitter Woman, J J'sdream, and Champali.  Glitterman last stood at Nathan Fox and Richard Kaster's Wafare Farm near Midway, Ky., but was pensioned in 2005 due to fertility problems.

“He was a, great champ, a great sire, and a great old friend,” said Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends. “He was stoic to the end, and we will miss him very much.”

History:
So it is with the dazzling stallion, Glitterman. Bred in Kentucky with plenty of back class, the bright bay colt won nearly half a million dollars on the track, and that was in the days before inflation.

He caught on fast, winning his second race, and quickly moved up to stakes company. For much of his career he shone on the Florida tracks, winning the Banyan Handicap, the Miami Beach Handicap and the Tamarac Handicap at Caulder, then taking the Louisiana Downs Breeders’ Cup Stakes and Philadelphia Park Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2), then taking on Belmont Park to take a 3rd in the Grade 1 Vosburgh.

But it was as a sire that Glitterman sparkled brightest. Among his progeny are multiple stakes winner Get My Glitter, the multiple Grade 2 winning mare J Jsdream, Glitter Woman whose many graded stakes wins include the Ashland Stakes (G1), Balto Star who captured graded stakes on both dirt and turf to tue tune over $2 million, and Champali, darling of the Kentucky tracks, who is now a young sire, himself.

Glitterman left stud duty at Wafare Farm in 2005 due to decreasing fertility. He was pensioned to Richland Hills Farm, and came to Old Friends in April 2009 with fellow pensioner Polish Navy. An independent spirit, he is often gracious to his visitors, accepting praise and carrots as his due.
