A. P. SLEW 1999-2014

Geri - Slew the Queen, by Seattle Slew | 1999 Gelding - (View Pedigree)

Obit:
December 21, 2014     We are greatly saddened to share that we lost our old friend A.P. Slew to complications from colic.   After undergoing exploratory surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, the decision was made to euthanize A.P. Slew.   He was loved by many and we will miss him very much.

History:
Every year many nicely bred young horses begin their racing careers.  A few with extraordinary talent and luck fulfill their connections’ hopes, but more have stories like A. P. Slew’s.  Certainly, his beginning was auspicious.  Bred in Kentucky by Allen E. Paulson, A. P. Slew is grandson to triple crown winner Seattle Slew and to turf champion Theatrical, and great-grandson to Hall of Fame filly Silver Spoon.

Debuting in the same stable as Azeri, he was trained by Laura De Seroux, then D. Wayne Lukas.  He flashed speed, running in the money at Hollywood Park, Del Mar and Belmont, and winning at Aqueduct.  But he didn’t go on to glory.  Often he suddenly lost momentum, perhaps from the lung congestion (bleeding) that hampered him later in his career.  Eventually, he sank into the claiming ranks.  While some claiming horses get good care, he did not long remain one of the lucky ones.  He had some hard years.  Earning less the older he got, he was slated for a slaughter auction in the spring of 2008.  At the last moment his luck turned.  R.A.C.E. Fund in Pennsylvania bought him with financial help from the Paulson Living Trust.  He went for adoption to the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, which contacted Old Friends.  As his fortunes bettered, the handsome little chestnut regained his trust and sweetness, only to face yet another threat in early 2009 from EPM, an often-fatal neurological illness.

But A. P. Slew’s got grit.  He came through it and continues to regain ground.  Now the gutsy little guy enjoys the ease and care that he—like the other hard-working horses who give their all for the sport—has abundantly earned.
